When your title is “Head of Great Company”, you have a lot to live up to. At the recent “Best Employer Summit” hosted at Le Meridien Grosvenor House, Kay Winsper of Microsoft set out to explain how Microsoft came to be ranked the number on company to work for in the Sunday Times employer league table for 2003.

Microsoft’s People Vision is: “An environment where great people can do their best work and be on a path to realise their potential”. While this vision clearly emphasises the benefit to employees of working for Microsoft, the company also employs a model that links people management to business performance.

To give some indication of the success of their approach to people management Microsoft UK’s latest employee opinion survey (93% response rate) posted the following results:

• 93% of staff feel proud to work for Microsoft and say “it makes a positive difference to the world we live in”.

• 92% are excited about where Microsoft is going, and would miss it if they left.

• 90% praised Microsoft’s positive and faith-inspiring leadership, together with a high regard for its customers.

• 89% say they love working for Microsoft.
